„Gubaidulina’s substantial „Sonnengesang“ („The Canticle of the Sun“) (…) is also enormously demanding for the cellist, but one could hardly wish for a better soloist than Ivan Monighetti. (…) Monighetti’s performance, as captured in NDR’s excellent recording, is unusually present, as is the choir, thus making every detail audible, and I feel that it has an unusual immediacy.

(…) we have a jubilant first recording of the psalm-setting „Jauchzt vor Gott“ and the organ solo „Hell und Dunkel“, both of which exult in typically Gubaidulinian massive contrasts of texture and volume, and the three works form a highly satisfactory programme. Ahmann’s direction is spot-on, and the choir acquit themselves splendidly. Praise too for organist Christian Schmitt, who clearly enjoys the composer’s idiosyncratic organ-writing to the full.

“One of the bedrocks of modern music, such as Gubaidulina's "Canticle of the sun", moved Mstislav Rostropovich to tears at his premiere. "Canticle of the sun" is a broad, dramaturgically clear ritual along the text of Francis of Assisi praising all creatures and requests from the performer a sonorous, tender expression, but without any exaggeration of the feeling. The North German Radio Choir succeeds in the latest publication of this work, an expression which is incomparable from all perspectives. (…)

The text "Jauchzt vor Gott", based on Psalm 66, naturally contains some joyful expression - but only towards the end of the work. That part of the work, in which the organ and the mixed chorus act against each other, develops rather from a fearful and painful condition. The unsurpassed recording of the North German Broadcasting is the first recording of the vocally demanding work.

The main work on the recording, Guibaidulinas “Canticle of the sun”, is technically perhaps easier, but more demanding in its 40-minute length and dramaturgy. Directed by Philipp Ahmann, the choir and the soloists of the North German Broadcasting, the cellist Ivan Monghetti and the percussion instrumentalists succeed in creating a delicate world of colors. In its wide color palette the recording sounds warm. (…)”

„The primary attraction of this disc for most listeners would probably be Canticle of the Sun, one of Gubaidulina’s best-known works and one that has received at least four other recordings to my knowledge. (…) All of these accounts have been well received and this new one can easily join this illustrious group. (…)

This new recording (…) has a natural perspective with cellist Ivan Monighetti upfront and the choir and percussion behind. While one can fully appreciate the cellist and choir (…).

The briefest work on the disc, Jauchzt vor Gott (“Make a joyful noise unto God”) is a world première recording. Despite its short duration, this is an impressive piece that makes quite an impact. (…) I cannot imagine a better performance than that given here by the NDR Choir and organist Christian Schmitt. (…)

I have no hesitation in recommending this SACD for those wanting this particular programme. The performances are all excellent and the sound is very good, too, even in the two channels in which I auditioned the recording. (…)“

„Zum 85. Geburtstag der weltbekannten tatarischen Komponistin Sofia Gubaidulina veröffentlicht BIS drei herausragende Einspielungen aus dem Archiv des Norddeutschen Rundfunks, die bereits 2011/12 aufgezeichnet wurden, darunter "Jauchzt vor Gott" als CD-Premiere. Man greift nicht zu hoch, die vorliegenden Aufnahmen als Referenz zu betrachten. Die CD setzt musikalisch, aufnahmetechnisch und auch in interpertatorischer Hinsicht Maßstäbe.

Seinen Weltrang bestätigt der NDR-Chor unter Philipp Ahmann bereits mit "Jauchzt vor Gott" für gemischten Chor und Orgel (...) .

Auch das 1976 entstandene Orgelsolo Hell und dunkel folgt einem klaren Kontrastprinzip: flirrende, schnelle Läufe im hohen Register interagieren hierbei mit dunkel gefärbten, tiefen Akkordfolgen. Christian Schmitt ist der souveräne Gestalter an der fabelhaft klingenden Orgel der Kulturkirche Altona.

Den zweifellos stärksten Eindruck hinterlässt Gubaidulinas Vertonung des "Cantico delle creature" ("Sonnengesang") Franz von Assisis für Violoncello, Kammerchor und Schlagzeug von 1997/98. (...) Ivan Monighetti ist der ideale Interpret, sekundiert wiederum vom NDR-Chor und Elbtonal Percussion.

Wer sich bislang mit der Musik Gubaidulinas schwer getan hat oder ihr noch nicht begegnet ist, sollte hier zugreifen. Eine ganz außerordentliche Einspielung, die dem Rang der Komponistin mehr als würdig ist.“

„Wiederaufnahme einer Tradition – Der NDR Chor setzt seine Tradition, zeitgenössische Chormusik zu fördern, mit dieser großartigen Einspielung auf eindrucksvolle Weise fort. (…) 'Jauchzt vor Gott' für Chor und Orgel aus dem Jahr 1989 ist eine Vertonung einiger Zeilen aus dem 66. Psalm. (…) 2012 erfolgte die hier vorliegende Einspielung in der Hamburger Hauptkirche St. Nikolai. Mit ihr führt der NDR Chor unter seinem Leiter Philipp Ahmann die große Tradition der Einspielung bedeutender neuer Chormusik in höchster Qualität fort – eine Tradition, die etwas ins Hintertreffen geraten war, weswegen die neue BIS-SACD (in beeindruckend großflächigem und doch klar strukturiertem Klang) umso mehr willkommen zu heißen ist. Christian Schmitt ist in diesem Fall ein kongenialer Partner, dem sein Orgelpart hörbar ‚in den Fingern’ liegt. Bereits in dem kurzen Chorstück „Jauchzt vor Gott“ gelingt dem Chor und den mitunter einzeln hervortretenden Stimmen eine vollendete Klangbalance im Widerspiel mit der Orgel, die in ihrem von Christian Schmitt realisierten Solo „Hell und Dunkel“ ohne aufzutrumpfen oder alle Register zu ziehen ein musikalisches Gemälde feiner, doch kontrastreicher Farben entstehen lässt.
